Spring will be here soon, so although the weather is still a bit chilly and grey, we know alot of people who are itching to get out in their garden. We’ve put together a few things of how to keep yourself busy in the garden for now.
1. Prepare vegetable seed beds and sow vegetables under cover
It’s a good time to identify any tools that need fixing and anything you’re missing that you may want later in the year.
2. Chit potato tubers
It’s important with early potatoes, and a good idea with main crop potatoes to chit them before planting. This means encouraging the development of short, stubby shoots prior to planting. This can potentially lead to an earlier and more productive harvest, especially for early potato varieties
3. Protect blossoms on fruit trees
Buds are especially vulnerable to to frost and may need protection to ensure they crop well.
4. Net fruit and vegetable crops to protect them from birds
5. Renovate overgrown hedges
We recommend this is done by pruning and also prune any ornamental grasses towards the end of February. This encourages new growth to come through and make your hedges look healthier.
6. Continue to keep your bird feeders stocked up
