Gardening in a Heatwave

Our Top Tips for Gardening in a Heatwave
When temperatures soar, it’s tempting to stay indoors and leave the garden to fend for itself. However, we know some of our customers will still be itching to get in the garden regardless of the heat. We’ve put together a few simple jobs that you can do if you want to stay busy, and how to keep yourself safe whilst doing so.
Watering in a heatwave
We advise it is better to water deeply and less frequently rather than a light sprinkle each day. This encourages roots to grow further into the soil, making plants more resilient during dry spells. Early morning or late evening are the best times to water, as less moisture is lost through evaporation. Pay particular attention to containers, hanging baskets, and newly planted shrubs, as these dry out much faster than established plants.
To weed or not to weed?
Weeds compete with your plants for precious water and nutrients, so removing them regularly will help your flowers, vegetables, and shrubs make the most of the available moisture. It’s often easiest to pull weeds out after watering or following a light shower when the soil is softer.
Deadheading
Deadheading flowers is another worthwhile task. Removing faded blooms encourages many annuals and perennials to continue producing flowers, keeping borders colourful for longer. It’s also a good opportunity to harvest herbs, fruit, and vegetables regularly, as many crops will ripen quickly during warm weather.
Planting new additions
If you’re planning to plant anything new, consider waiting until temperatures cool slightly or choose a cloudy day. Young plants can struggle to establish themselves during extreme heat, even with regular watering. If planting can’t be delayed, water thoroughly before and after planting and consider providing temporary shade for a few days.
Look after you
Finally, remember to look after yourself as well as your garden. Wear a hat, apply sunscreen, stay hydrated, and tackle gardening jobs during the cooler parts of the day. A little planning and regular maintenance will help your garden stay healthy and vibrant, even when the summer sun is at its strongest.
